This little ceramic owl sits on my desk all day and watches me draw. I thought I’d draw him and let him feel a little more involved for a change. He was my grandma’s so I claimed him as my own.

A thumbnail sketch for a spread in the Glassandra book. I haven’t shown the author anything yet, so we’ll see what he says.

I redid a painting for someone today. I sold my original, and this person also wanted the original, so I made apple #2. The second one came out a little better than the first.

Front and back cover sketch for Vulture Verses. They decided that the African landscape wasn’t a logical setting since most of the animals are from North America, so I set it in the Midwest. I like it better. I also like the cover with the vulture to the side instead of center. Color sketches are next, then hopefully the finals will be done before Thanksgiving! That’s my goal!

Just a sketch of someone in the audience at a Philosophy lecture I attended at Biola by Dallas Willard. I couldn’t tell you want it was about, but I have a sketch to prove I was there! -Bobo

This may or may not be a final for the book I’m workin on, so I’m posting it. I haven’t showed it to the author yet, but I took it to finish to see how it would look. Charcoal pencil on watercolor paper, about 6x9.

So this last week my grandma, Mary Gallegos, passed away. It’s been hard, but at the same time, I haven’t really processed it yet because she lived in Idaho, so it kind of doesn’t seem real yet. I’m going up there next weekend for the memorial service and I’m sure it will feel a lot more real once I’m there with all my family. But until then, I’m not even really sure what I feel. My grandma was a painter and a house-wife and loved her family deeply. Growing up I always saw this painting that my grandma did (I’m guessing it’s more of a study than a finished piece) sitting in her garage. I always liked it and one day, before she moved from Whittier to Idaho, I asked her what she was going to do with it. She didn’t even want it so I told her I wanted it and it’s been hanging in my room ever since. It’s my favorite painting of my grandma’s. So in memory of her, and her artistic skills, I did a study of her study. Mine is a little more polished and “finished”…I don’t know if I would be able to capture the spontaneity of her strokes.

This week my students are doing a observational landscape painting project using analogous colors - plein air!! - so I did a little study in acrylic as a demo. This is a scene from the dog park I go to. It’s so jungley!

I did absolutely no sketching on the Honeymoon and I feel horrible inside. I need to draw!! So I did some sketches from paintings today, just to get back into things and feed my hunger!…here’s one of today’s sketches.
